A special commission: this farewell shroud was designed around a personal drawing with deep meaning. The warm yellow tones give it a soft and golden appearance.
It was a privilege to create this farewell shroud on commission – a truly meaningful and personal assignment. It is always a great responsibility to translate someone’s wishes into a final, comforting covering.
In this case, the design was based on a drawing that held deep significance for the client. I painted this drawing in the center of the front panel of the shroud. Its colors – mainly warm yellows, with accents of orange and purple – formed the palette for the entire design.
I started by painting two silk panels, each measuring 140 x 360 cm. After steaming the silk to fix the dyes, I felted both pieces with a warm ochre Merino wool.
The combination of the yellow silk and the ochre-colored wool creates a rich, golden look. As the wool shrinks and ripples during felting, it produces a subtle sheen and texture. The purple and orange tones, blending with the ochre, create beautiful earthy hues.
After felting, each panel had shrunk about 25%, resulting in dimensions of approximately 270 x 105 cm per piece. I carefully stitched the two parts together and finished all edges by rolling and sewing them.
The final shroud measures around 270 x 210 cm.
