A customer gave me the wonderful assignment to make a wedding gift in which lavender plays the leading role, because this has a special meaning for the couple.
For this assignment I painted a large silk canvas of 300 cm long and 140 cm wide with a free interpretation of a lavender field. After studying lavender fields and lavender varieties and the color of lavender, I started painting without a real plan. First by applying light areas of color and then by painting increasingly detailed layers. After steaming the silk I selected a beautiful wool in lavender blue/lilac. I then felted this wool with the steamed silk. Through (wet) felting, the fiber of the wool passes through the silk. The wool shrinks by about 25% and takes the silk with it. This creates a beautifully supple felt fabric with shiny little bumps of silk. The cloth can be used as a grand foulard, wall hanging or stretched on a frame as a wall panel. The choice is up to the couple.
