THE BARRAUD BROTHERS

18 February 2019

Last Sunday I visited Museum MORE in Gorssel - The Netherlands.
At this moment the work of “The brothers Barraud” can be admired.
And I certainly admired the work. Special paintings of often very ordinary subjects. Alternating people and still lifes. Intrusive and often with a little humor. And beautiful colors. . . Greyed colors, but also bright colors of, for example, flowers.

THE BARRAUD BROTHERS

They are probably the best kept secret of Switzerland: the Barraud brothers. Four brothers in art. Four very talented painters within one family. A lucky four-leaf clover? A near-miracle? Perhaps. Museum MORE wants to show that there is much more quality and variation in modern Swiss art than the usual suspects such as Giacometti and Hodler. The Barrauds are worth to be discovered outside Switzerland, because their paintings are important representatives of European realism from the 1920s and 1930s. For the first time, people outside of Switzerland can become acquainted with the Barrauds and dozens of their impressive figure pieces, silent still lifes and penetrating portraits, often with an enigmatic twist.
